Since 1982, Channel 4 has interpreted its role to serve alternative interests by catering for minorities, particularly those from different ethnic backgrounds. From the anchors on the News to special interest magazines such as Eastern Eye and Black Bag, from comedies like Desmond’s to dramas such as My Beautiful Laundrette, people learned about the different cultural backgrounds of their fellow citizens. Today the schedule is equally, if not even more diverse, but then Britain is now home to some of the most ethnically varied and integrated communities in the world and Channel 4 continues to make a difference by interrogating the economic, political and social issues arising from ongoing immigration, and the tensions caused within Britain’s Muslim communities by the ongoing War on Terror.
