Filmspotting

The story of Channel 4’s relationship with film is best told through the filmmakers it has supported – Ken Loach, Stephen Frears, Mike Leigh, Danny Boyle, Kevin McDonald, Sarah Gavron and Shane Meadows to name just a few. Channel 4 has championed British independent filmmaking, helping to secure the widest possible distribution for dozens of iconic titles including My Beautiful Laundrette, Trainspotting, The Madness of King George and East is East. They’ve all been shown on the small screen as well, creating a real distinction from the soaps-and-serials which dominate the schedules of other broadcasters. The tradition has continued to today as Film4 develops and funds acclaimed British films for cinema release, such as The Last King of Scotland and This is England.
