The determination of people to re-design their homes, their relationships, their bodies, their lives – or, in extreme cases, all of the above – is a powerful and growing modern trend. Television has played a central role in inspiring its viewers towards change and Channel 4, in particular, has encouraged the attainment of aspirations in programmes as diverse as How to Look Good Naked, No Going Back, and Brat Camp. Tuning into the dreams of the viewing public has made feature and lifestyle programmes amongst the most powerful and popular brands on the box – The Times once said of Channel 4’s Faking It that it was doing more to shrink the class divide than any politician or party.
