Toby a 33 year old with Downs Syndrome discusses his dead mother. Extract from Jack Thorne’s script, The Spastic King
Toby is sitting up on the side of his bed. Taking off his shoes, this is quite a difficult task. It should be just starting to become apparent how much he let his Mum do for him.
INT. VOX POP.
PATEL
We like Toby, very much. He puts leaflets in the newspapers for our delivery boys to post. They never do it properly - Toby does.
EXT. BUS STOP. DAY.
TOBY (TO CAM)
The secret to making sure no-one guesses your Mum’s dead is to do everything the same. If you’re a bastard, stay bastard. if you’re always late then stay always late.
ANNIE
Have you got photos on that thing?
TOBY
What?
ANNIE
You know how some of them have - photos you can take pictures ...
TOBY
No. Not this one.
ANNIE
Can I have a look? Don’t worry I won’t nick it.
TOBY
Yeah?
ANNIE
Nope, what a shame, I was going to have you take a picture of the back of my head. I have a theory that last impressions are more important than first ... I’m going to an interview. Sorry. I’ll leave you be.
TOBY
No, it’s ok.
ANNIE
I just think that it’s pointless sitting by someone and not saying hi, if you want to. Or asking them a favour, if you need one. But maybe I’m weird.
TOBY
You were here ... yesterday ...
ANNIE
That’s right, a different interview, which I didn’t get. Listen, if I showed you the back of my head, would you tell me honestly if it looked odd.
TOBY
OK.
ANNIE
What do you think?
TOBY
Very nice.
ANNIE
Great arse, right?
TOBY
What?
ANNIE
Oh! Saved by the bus! Wish me luck!
