Daisy Leitch discovers property really is about Location, Location, Location

Goldfinger’s Lair

Trellick Tower, London W10.

1 bedroom flat £250,000.

A wonderful opportunity to acquire a well presented one bedroom flat in this iconic grade II listed building located on the 15th floor. The property offers a spacious reception room with a balcony leading off, a good sized kitchen and a modern bathroom.

Balfron Tower, London E14.

3 bedroom flat £200,000.

Amazing, stunning, spectacular views in this grade II listed block, moments from Canary Wharf, with three double bedrooms, makes this a spectacular first time purchase or for investment. A must view!

A one bedroom flat on the fifteenth floor of the Trellick Tower in north Kensington costs 50 grand more than a three-bedroom flat on the 24th floor of Balfron Tower in the Poplar area of Tower Hamlets. At first sight, this massive discrepancy is shocking, for these towers are strikingly similar architectural icons. While they may not be identical twins, they are certainly very close siblings. Both built by Erno Goldfinger and completed within five years of each other, both now grade II listed buildings. The flats and maisonettes within the towers are broadly the same, being functional and designed with large windows and balconies to offer access to the fantastic views of their respective ends of London; Balfron’s being the City and the Thames, and Trellick’s west London and beyond.

However, the difference in price between the two is not surprising after a closer inspection. Approaching Trellick is quite a different experience to approaching Balfron. Trellick’s immediate vicinity is bustling with life – shops catering to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Choose from the Trellick Tea rooms (sticky bun, 40p) or Rellik, the vintage designer store (sunglasses, £300). There’s a brand new playground directly in front of the Tower, a community garden behind and a school to the side. It’s life, and it’s thriving.
